Immerse yourself in breathtaking fall foliage, savor farm-to-table culinary delights, and explore charming New England towns at your own pace. Forget the stress of jam-packed itineraries; this guide empowers you to wander, explore, and truly experience the unparalleled beauty of Vermont in its most glorious season.

For years, a fall trip to Vermont topped my vacation wishlist. Growing up in the Midwest, the allure of New England’s stunning autumnal beauty always captivated me. I even harbored a childhood dream of eventually moving to the East Coast, perhaps even Maine. While that particular dream remains an aspiration, I did make it as far as New York – close enough to experience the unique charm of this picturesque region, even if New Yorkers are quick to remind you it’s not technically New England! The dream of experiencing Vermont’s legendary fall colors, however, persisted, a vivid picture painted in my mind of winding roads, covered bridges, and mountains ablaze with crimson, gold, and orange.

After a few not-so-subtle hints to my husband about my desire to visit Vermont in the fall (which he, of course, completely missed!), I took matters into my own hands. For his birthday, I surprised him with tickets to see one of his favorite comedians in Burlington, and then I meticulously (but loosely) planned the rest. My vision for this trip was decidedly anti-schedule. I wanted a vacation free from the confines of rigid timings and pre-booked slots, a true escape where spontaneity reigned supreme. My personality simply doesn’t align with highly structured itineraries; I thrive on the freedom to linger a little longer, to spontaneously turn down a scenic back road just because it looks inviting, or to adjust our plans based on the day’s mood or unexpected discoveries. And yes, this meant several delightful detours down charming, unexplored routes that promised nothing more than beautiful scenery.

If you’re seeking a rejuvenating few days away, perhaps a long weekend immersed in nature’s autumnal masterpiece, this guide is crafted just for you. It’s a carefully curated collection of recommendations for where to stay, what engaging activities to pursue, and, of course, what delectable local flavors to savor. Prepare to fall in love with Vermont, just as I did.
Why Vermont is the Ultimate Fall Destination
Vermont in the fall is more than just a destination; it’s an experience, a symphony of color and crisp air that rejuvenates the soul. The state is renowned for having some of the most spectacular fall foliage in the world, drawing visitors globally to witness its transformation. The rolling hills, picturesque mountains, and quaint villages become canvases for nature’s most brilliant palette. Beyond the visual feast, the autumn season brings a unique charm to Vermont, marked by bountiful harvests, cozy traditions, and a palpable sense of community spirit. It’s a time when the fresh scent of apple cider donuts fills the air, and every turn of the road presents a postcard-perfect scene.
To truly embrace the magic, consider visiting between late September and mid-October. This window typically offers peak foliage, though nature’s timing can always vary slightly year to year. Packing layers is essential, as temperatures can fluctuate from crisp mornings to mild afternoons, sometimes even hinting at winter with an unexpected dusting of snow, as we experienced!
Where to Stay: Indulge in Vermont Hospitality

Our unforgettable fall adventure began with a stay at The Essex, Vermont’s Culinary Resort & Spa, and it was nothing short of delightful. This gem perfectly blends a charming, quaint New England ambiance with all the luxurious amenities you could desire. From the moment we arrived, we were enchanted by its warm, inviting atmosphere, feeling both sophisticated and incredibly cozy.
The resort boasts two exceptional restaurants, offering diverse dining experiences that cater to every palate. For those eager to hone their culinary skills, the on-site cooking classes are a major draw, providing an immersive and fun way to connect with Vermont’s vibrant food scene. And for ultimate relaxation, the spa offers a serene sanctuary. Each morning, we were greeted by the aroma of fresh baked pastries, a perfect start to our autumnal days. Our room, in particular, was truly outstanding – incredibly spacious, easily larger than my very first apartment! It was a haven of comfort, tastefully decorated, and designed to make guests feel utterly at home. As a personal quirk, I always sleep better with a fan, and when I called the front desk, one was delivered to our room almost instantly. That’s the kind of thoughtful service that truly elevates a stay.

The Essex offers a plethora of activities right on its expansive property, ensuring there’s always something to do, regardless of the weather. Guests can enjoy a friendly game of tennis, stroll along picturesque walking paths that wind through beautifully maintained grounds, or gather around the outdoor fire pit for an evening of warmth and conversation under the stars. The luxurious spa provides a range of treatments for ultimate pampering, while the cooking classes, as mentioned, offer a unique, hands-on experience. For those seeking active pursuits, there’s a refreshing swimming pool, and the resort’s commitment to its culinary roots is charmingly evident in its vegetable garden and the presence of adorable, clucking chickens. It truly is a self-contained oasis.

Despite the chilly autumn air during our visit, I made sure to carve out time each day to wander the property, simply soaking in the serene atmosphere and appreciating the crisp fall landscape. For me, vacation isn’t just about the destination; it’s about embracing every moment of exploration, even if it’s just a leisurely walk around the hotel grounds. One Saturday, we even had the pleasure of witnessing a beautiful wedding taking place. It was impossible not to steal a glance at the happy couple posing for photos, a lovely reminder of life’s celebratory moments. Who doesn’t love a wedding, right?

Dining at the resort’s acclaimed restaurant, Junction, was another highlight. The culinary philosophy here is deeply rooted in local, fresh, and seasonal ingredients, resulting in dishes that are truly out of this world. While I generally find it a bit awkward to photograph every dish in a fine dining setting, I can vividly recall the exquisite Hudson Valley duck I savored. It was perfectly prepared, accompanied by sweet black mission figs, wonderfully crispy baby Brussels sprouts, a vibrant beet paint, and rich braised red cabbage. Every element on the plate sang with the flavors of fall, creating a meal that perfectly encapsulated the essence of our Vermont autumn escape.
What to Do: Unforgettable Experiences in Fall Vermont
1. Sweet Indulgence: Ben & Jerry’s Factory Tour

While some might deem it a quintessential “tourist” activity, the Ben & Jerry’s Factory Tour proved to be a surprisingly fun and informative experience. Visiting during the fall, on a Friday no less, meant it wasn’t overly crowded, allowing for a more relaxed and enjoyable visit. The tour itself is concise but packed with interesting insights into the company’s history, their quirky flavors, and their commitment to social responsibility. The grand finale, of course, is a generous scoop of free ice cream at the end! On our visit, the “flavor of the day” was cotton candy. I’ll admit, I was initially a bit skeptical, as I’m not typically a fan of overly sweet ice creams. However, I was pleasantly surprised – it was absolutely delicious, perfectly balanced, and a delightful treat.

Another highlight of the visit was exploring the whimsical “Flavor Graveyard,” a humorous tribute to retired Ben & Jerry’s flavors. It’s a bittersweet walk down memory lane, prompting debates over why certain beloved flavors were ever discontinued. I still ponder the mystery of White Russian’s demise – surely, Mr. Lebowski himself would be gravely disappointed!
2. Soaring Views: The Stowe Gondola SkyRide

The Stowe Gondola Ride was a completely spontaneous addition to our itinerary, a perfect example of our “no-schedule” philosophy yielding incredible rewards. We were simply driving through the picturesque landscape when I spotted the gondolas ascending the mountain and let out a little squeal of delight. That delight, however, was momentarily replaced by a jolt of nervousness once I was actually inside the gondola, slowly climbing higher and higher towards the mountain peak. Confession: I’m not usually a huge fan of heights. But rest assured, after my initial jitters subsided, the panoramic views that unfolded were nothing short of spectacular, making every moment of the ascent entirely worthwhile. The sea of vibrant fall colors stretching as far as the eye could see was truly breathtaking.

For the truly adventurous, ziplining from the mountaintop is an option, but for me, that was a definite “big fat NO.” Especially on a day when the summit was enveloped in a thick, mysterious fog – the thought of ziplining blindly into the mist felt like the opening scene of a horror movie! However, if that thrill appeals to you, I wholeheartedly encourage you to embrace the adventure. The mountain top also offers hiking trails for those who prefer to explore on foot.

Once you reach the summit, you have several options for descending: you can hike down, opt for the zipline, or simply take the gondola back. There’s also a cozy restaurant at the top, perfect for grabbing a quick bite and soaking in the views. We chose to warm up with a bowl of hearty soup, a perfect comfort on a day that, surprisingly, brought a light snowfall while we were up there! It was an unexpected touch of winter magic amidst the fall colors.
3. Scenic Drive: Smugglers’ Notch

One of the most memorable drives of our trip was through Smugglers’ Notch, immediately following our gondola adventure. This historic mountain pass is incredibly impressive, known for its dramatic rock formations and narrow, winding road. It derives its name from its past, having been used by early Americans to smuggle goods from Canada during trade embargoes, and later by rum-runners during Prohibition. The drive itself is an experience, with towering cliffs and dense forest creating a truly immersive natural spectacle. During the harsh Vermont winters, the road through Smugglers’ Notch is completely closed to vehicle traffic, transforming into a pristine wonderland accessible only by snowshoes or skis, highlighting its wild, untamed nature.

Along the route, numerous pull-offs invite travelers to stop and capture the breathtaking scenery. I took every opportunity to pause, breathe in the crisp mountain air, and snap countless photos of the vibrant foliage clinging to the rugged slopes. It’s a photographer’s paradise and a true testament to Vermont’s natural beauty.
4. Hands-On Experience: Cooking Class at The Essex

Without a doubt, one of my absolute favorite activities during our Vermont getaway was participating in a cooking class at The Essex. We signed up for the “Bistro Favorites” class, and it was an absolute blast! While my husband and I enjoy cooking at home, this was a completely different and wonderfully immersive experience. We were guided by an exceptionally talented chef who expertly led us, along with seven other enthusiastic participants, through the process of preparing an exquisite French meal. It was a fantastic opportunity to learn new techniques and enjoy the camaraderie of cooking together.

Our menu for the evening included classic French onion soup, perfectly seared steak with a rich red wine shallot sauce, creamy gratin dauphinois, tender baby carrots, and, for dessert, the iconic crème brûlée. We learned invaluable lessons in timing and coordination, ensuring every dish was prepared and ready to serve simultaneously. The men in the group were put on “steak duty,” and it was thoroughly entertaining to watch my husband expertly cook while I relaxed with a glass of wine. Beyond acquiring new culinary skills, the class offered a unique social experience, fostering connections with fellow travelers over a shared love for food. It was more than just a lesson; it was a joyful communal cooking adventure.

The undisputed highlight of the night? Getting to use the blow torch to caramelize the sugar on our crème brûlées. It was undeniably the most fun and dramatic part of the whole experience!
5. Essential Fall Treats: Apples, Cider & Donuts

Let me be clear: if you’re venturing to Vermont in the fall, making a stop for fresh apples, local cider, and warm apple cider donuts is not just recommended, it’s absolutely essential. These are the quintessential flavors and experiences of a New England autumn, deeply woven into the fabric of Vermont’s fall charm. The crisp bite of a freshly picked apple, the comforting warmth of spiced cider, and the sweet, airy perfection of a still-warm apple cider donut are simply non-negotiable.

My husband and I made it a point to stop at every opportunity for these delightful goodies. Two places that truly stood out were Cold Hollow Cider Mill, famous for its continuously running cider press and, crucially, for its hot and incredibly fresh donuts. The aroma alone is worth the visit! We also thoroughly enjoyed Shelburne Orchards, where we picked several pounds of crisp apples straight from the trees, savored more of those irresistible donuts, and sipped on steaming hot cider. Visiting these orchards and mills isn’t just about the food; it’s about the entire experience—the crisp air, the rustic settings, and the joyous atmosphere that defines a Vermont fall.

6. The Art of Wandering: Just Drive

Finally, and perhaps most importantly, simply drive. This is the cornerstone of a truly stress-free Vermont fall vacation. Allow yourself the freedom to choose any road that catches your eye and follow where it leads. The beauty of Vermont’s back roads during autumn cannot be overstated. Each winding lane is a tunnel of color, an invitation to discover something new. If you spot something charming, whether it’s an old farm stand, a vibrant patch of trees, or a glistening stream, pull over and take it all in. This approach allowed me to stumble upon two beautiful covered bridges and even a hidden corn maze, simply by veering off the main thoroughfare and embracing the spirit of spontaneous exploration. Vermont is dotted with these charming historical structures; finding them feels like discovering a secret.

There’s also a certain playful joy in directing your travel companion with an excited, “OMG, turn left right here, it looks so beautiful!” It’s in these unplanned moments that some of the most cherished memories are made, fully immersing you in the tranquil, breathtaking autumn landscape of Vermont.
Planning Your Stress-Free Vermont Fall Getaway
While the essence of a stress-free trip lies in spontaneity, a few mindful preparations can enhance your experience significantly:
- When to Go: Aim for late September to mid-October for the best chance of witnessing peak fall foliage. Keep an eye on local foliage reports as the exact timing can vary year to year due to weather conditions.
- Packing Essentials: Layers are crucial. Pack sweaters, a warm jacket, hats, gloves, and comfortable walking shoes or boots. Weather can change quickly, from sunny and crisp to unexpectedly chilly or even rainy. A good camera is also a must for capturing the vibrant colors.
- Transportation: A car is absolutely indispensable for exploring Vermont. Its charm lies in its scenic back roads and small towns, many of which are not accessible by public transport.
- Accommodation: While my trip was spontaneous, booking accommodations, especially during peak fall foliage season, well in advance is highly recommended. Popular resorts and charming inns fill up quickly.
- Embrace the Local Scene: Beyond the highlights mentioned, seek out local farmers’ markets for fresh produce, artisan crafts, and homemade treats. Visit a maple sugar house to learn about Vermont’s famous syrup production, and explore the state’s burgeoning craft brewery and cidery scene.
Vermont in the fall is truly a destination that lives up to every expectation. Its natural beauty, coupled with its welcoming atmosphere and delightful local treasures, creates an unparalleled vacation experience. Embrace the freedom of the open road, let curiosity be your guide, and allow yourself to be completely enchanted by the breathtaking spectacle of New England’s autumn glory.
Disclosure: I was not monetarily compensated for writing this post. I was given a complimentary stay at The Essex, as well as dinner at Junction and a cooking class. As always, my opinions are 100% my own.
