The Mercury Inn stands out as one of Portland’s finest in-town accommodations. It offers that coveted quaint bed and breakfast charm, but without any of the awkwardness sometimes associated with such establishments. The breakfast here is truly exceptional, prepared with fresh, locally sourced, and in-season ingredients that elevate your morning meal. Each room has been thoughtfully updated, featuring incredibly comfortable beds and, importantly for those who prefer it, air conditioning. While many visitors might not prioritize AC in Maine, for a truly restful sleep, a cool room is non-negotiable for me.

A significant advantage of staying at the Mercury Inn is its prime location. You can park your car and explore much of the city on foot. Its proximity to Portland’s vibrant downtown area means many attractions, shops, and restaurants are just a pleasant stroll away, minimizing the need for driving and navigating parking.

If there’s one thing Kennebunkport has in spades, it’s an incredible variety of shops. Strolling through town, we discovered everything from specialty stores dedicated entirely to hot sauce to high-end boutiques featuring jewelry that commanded prices well beyond my budget. I nearly purchased a beautiful Maine rope bracelet, but chickened out at the last minute, fearing it might look too bulky on my wrist. A definite regret! I almost want to plan another trip just to go back and get one. The diverse shopping experience, from quirky finds to luxurious treats, makes browsing a true pleasure in Kennebunkport.

The Bush Compound

While I may never understand my fascination with grand houses I could never afford, catching a glimpse of the Bush Compound was undeniably fascinating. Beyond the interesting historical context, it provided a wonderful excuse to explore the rocky coastline and play by the ocean, taking in the dramatic Maine seascape. Earth at Hidden Pond

Dining at Earth at Hidden Pond was an absolutely transcendent experience, easily ranking among my top five amazing meals of all time. We began our evening with an engaging seasonal mixology class, crafting delicious cocktails, before moving on to a truly spectacular private dinner. The food was beyond exquisite, and I left feeling so incredibly satisfied, I thought I might need to be rolled out! The undisputed star of the night for me was their innovative chicken wings, surprisingly coated in a rich squid ink sauce – a unique and unforgettable flavor sensation.

The Clam Shack

The Clam Shack in Kennebunkport is a local legend for a reason. As my husband and I drove past, he confidently declared, “Oh, that place is good.” When I asked if he’d been there, he replied, “Nope, but you can tell from the outside that it’s an awesome place.” He was absolutely right! This unpretentious shack serves up generous fried seafood baskets, overflowing with food. Expect mountains of crispy crinkle fries and perfectly fried shrimp – a classic, satisfying taste of coastal Maine.

Rococo Artisan Ice Cream

Good ice cream is an essential component of any successful vacation, and Rococo Artisan Ice Cream certainly delivers. My friends and I stopped in for some incredible sweet treats. I opted for a scoop of rich coffee and dark chocolate, only to promptly drop the chocolate all over my white shirt. Some things never change – I truly cannot be trusted to wear white around delicious food. Despite my minor mishap, the ice cream itself was heavenly, with unique and sophisticated flavors.

Their wild Maine blueberry pancakes, perfectly complemented by a tangy lemon curd, are simply divine. Another standout is their hash, creatively crafted from tender short ribs – a savory delight. And for the Bloody Mary enthusiasts, their version is a must-try. Not only is it incredibly delicious, but it also comes adorned with a strip of crispy bacon, making it an ideal brunch indulgence.

Ferris Lodge (Rental Home)

During my stay on Orr’s Island, I had the pleasure of sharing a rental home with friends, and it was simply fabulous. While the lodge possessed a charming, older character, what truly captivated me was its spaciousness, unique personality, and, most importantly, the stunning, panoramic views of the bay. I am an absolute sucker for a house with a view! My room, for example, featured a private sink – quite possibly the smallest private sink on the planet – adding to its quirky charm. My friend Julie even discovered a second, secret hobbit-door entrance to her room. This house was truly brimming with character and provided an unforgettable backdrop to our island getaway.

Casco Bay Boat Tour

The narrated noontime cruise around Casco Bay is an activity I wholeheartedly recommend. For just $16, it offers incredible value, and if you can secure a seat outside, the views are absolutely breathtaking. The tour actually departs from Bailey Island, just one island over from Orr’s, making it easily accessible. After the cruise, you can enjoy a pleasant stroll to Cook’s Lobster & Ale House for some of the best seafood and beer around – a perfect pairing for a perfect day.
