Heartwarming Chicken and Chard Tortilla Soup: A Flavorful Family Favorite
There’s nothing quite like a steaming bowl of soup to bring comfort and joy, especially when it’s as vibrant and flavorful as this Chicken and Chard Tortilla Soup. Perfectly spiced, incredibly hearty, and crowned with delightfully crunchy homemade tortilla strips, this recipe is a guaranteed hit for any family dinner. Forget those who say soup isn’t a meal – in our home, a good soup is 100% a satisfying and cherished centerpiece!
When the weekend rolls around, I often prepare a large pot of this tortilla soup, knowing it will be enjoyed throughout the day. From a quick, satisfying lunch to a cozy dinner, and sometimes even a surprisingly delicious breakfast (no judgment here!), this soup is versatile and always welcome. It’s a dish that warms you from the inside out, making it ideal for any season.

This particular Chicken and Chard Tortilla Soup holds a special place among my favorites. It strikes the perfect balance of flavors, ensuring it appeals to everyone at the table, even those with more sensitive palates. Each spoonful offers a harmonious blend of light smokiness, a bright hint of fresh lime, and just the right amount of gentle spice. The rich, savory chicken broth serves as the perfect canvas for these complex notes.
What truly elevates this soup are the toppings. I adore piling mine high with a generous sprinkle of fresh cilantro, a squeeze of extra lime juice, and, of course, a mountain of those irresistible crispy tortilla strips. But don’t stop there – consider adding creamy avocado, a dollop of sour cream, or a sprinkle of cotija cheese for an even more indulgent experience.

Unlocking Deep Flavor with Dried Chiles
The secret to the profound, authentic flavor in this tortilla soup lies in using dried chili peppers. While fresh peppers offer heat, dried varieties, like the pasilla chiles used here, deliver an unparalleled depth and intensity that simply cannot be replicated. When rehydrated and blended, they infuse the soup with a rich, earthy, and subtly complex character.
Pasilla peppers, in particular, are celebrated for their distinctive smoky and fruity notes. Many describe their flavor as reminiscent of raisins, a characteristic that gives them their name – “pasilla” in Spanish literally translates to “little raisin.” This unique sweetness, combined with a mild smokiness, contributes significantly to the soup’s overall warmth and complexity without overwhelming it with heat.
Worried about the spice? Don’t be! Pasilla peppers are generally known for being on the milder side of the chili spectrum. While a rogue spicy pepper can occasionally find its way into a bag, they are not typically fiery. For those who prefer a gentler flavor, starting with 2 chiles is a good approach; you can always add more if you desire a bolder taste. You’ll typically find dried pasilla peppers in the Mexican aisle of most well-stocked grocery stores or, even better, at your local Mexican market, where freshness and variety are often superior.
To prepare them, simply remove the stems and seeds, then cover them with hot water for about 15-20 minutes until they soften. This process not only rehydrates them but also mellows their flavor and makes them easier to blend into a smooth paste that becomes the foundation of our incredible soup base.
Effortless & Delicious: The Rotisserie Chicken Shortcut
While roasting your own chicken breasts for this soup is certainly an option and yields fantastic results, let’s be honest – life gets busy! That’s why I’m a huge proponent of smart shortcuts that don’t compromise on flavor. Picking up a pre-cooked rotisserie chicken from the grocery store is one of my favorite time-saving hacks, and it works wonderfully for this recipe. Simply shred the meat, and you’re ready to go!
Using rotisserie chicken not only cuts down on preparation time significantly but also helps keep your kitchen cool, which is especially appreciated on a hot summer day when the last thing you want is to fire up the oven. The pre-seasoned, tender meat from a rotisserie chicken adds another layer of flavor and ensures a moist, delicious texture in your soup.
Whether you choose to roast your own or opt for the convenient rotisserie chicken, the results will be equally delicious and satisfying. This versatility makes the recipe even more accessible for busy weeknights or relaxed weekend cooking. Plus, if you have extra rotisserie chicken, it’s perfect for other quick meals like my Crispy Chicken Apple Cabbage Salad!

Embracing Greens: Swiss Chard and Its Alternatives

One of the elements that makes this chicken tortilla soup particularly special is the addition of Swiss chard. This leafy green vegetable not only contributes a beautiful pop of color but also a slightly earthy flavor and a wealth of nutrients, making the soup even more wholesome and delicious. Swiss chard is packed with vitamins A, C, and K, as well as essential minerals and fiber, adding a fantastic nutritional boost to your meal.
Its tender leaves wilt beautifully into the hot broth, adding a subtle texture without overpowering the other ingredients. However, if Swiss chard isn’t readily available or if you prefer a different green, there are excellent substitutes:
- **Spinach:** A classic choice, spinach wilts quickly and has a mild flavor that blends seamlessly into most soups. Use fresh baby spinach for the best results, adding it at the very end of cooking.
- **Kale:** For a heartier option, kale works wonderfully. Its slightly more robust texture and earthy flavor stand up well to simmering. If using mature kale, you might want to massage it lightly with a bit of olive oil before adding it to help tenderize the leaves.
- **Collard Greens:** These offer a more assertive, slightly bitter flavor that can add an interesting dimension. They require a bit longer to cook until tender, so add them earlier in the simmering process.
The beauty of this recipe is its adaptability, allowing you to use your favorite greens while still enjoying a truly satisfying and nourishing bowl of soup.
The Foundation: Quality Tomatoes
The rich, tangy base of this tortilla soup also relies heavily on quality diced tomatoes. I often reach for brands that prioritize non-GMO verification and use non-BPA/BPS lined cans, as this is a significant plus for peace of mind. Supporting companies that are family-owned and committed to sustainable practices for generations, like some quality tomato brands, is always a great bonus!
These high-quality tomatoes provide the perfect balance to the smoky pasilla chiles, creating a robust and well-rounded flavor profile that is both comforting and invigorating. The diced format ensures a pleasant texture throughout the soup, contributing to its hearty appeal.
The Irresistible Crunch: Homemade Tortilla Strips
While store-bought tortilla strips are convenient, I wholeheartedly encourage you to make your own for this soup. The difference in taste and texture is truly remarkable! Homemade strips are infinitely crunchier, fresher, and more flavorful, transforming each bowl into an extraordinary culinary experience.
Plus, making them at home is incredibly simple and requires just a few basic ingredients: corn tortillas, olive oil, and a sprinkle of kosher salt and pepper. You’ll likely buy a large pack of corn tortillas, leaving you with plenty of leftovers. This means you can make extra strips to snack on or keep for future soups, salads, or even as a crunchy topping for casseroles. It’s an excellent way to elevate a simple ingredient into something truly special!
The process is quick and easy: simply cut the tortillas into strips, drizzle with olive oil, season, and bake until golden and crisp. The aroma filling your kitchen will be an added bonus, and the fresh, savory crunch will make every bite of your tortilla soup unforgettable. Trust me, once you try homemade tortilla strips, you’ll never go back!

Ingredients
For soup:
- 4 dried pasilla chiles, stemmed and seeded
- 1 tablespoon extra virgin olive oil
- 1 medium yellow onion, roughly chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 (28 ounce) can diced tomatoes
- 8 cups chicken stock
- 4 cups shredded cooked chicken
- 4 cups thinly sliced Swiss chard leaves
- 2 tablespoons lime juice, freshly squeezed
For tortilla strips:
- 12 6 inch corn tortillas, cut into strips
- Extra virgin olive oil
- Kosher salt and pepper
For roast chicken:
- 2 bone-in split chicken breasts
- 1 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil
- ½ teaspoon kosher salt
- ½ teaspoon ground black pepper
For topping:
- 6 wedges fresh lime
- 2 cups crispy corn tortilla strips
- 1 cup shredded cheese
- 1 whole cubed avocado
- ½ cup chopped cilantro
Instructions
For soup:
-
Add chiles to a bowl and cover with a little hot water to help soften the pepper; set aside for 15-20 minutes.
-
In a large soup pot, add olive oil and set over medium heat.
-
Once the oil is hot, add in the onion and sauté just until the onion is soft and translucent, about 5-7 minutes.
-
Add in the minced garlic and cook for another 30 seconds, or until the garlic is fragrant, being careful not to burn it.
-
Remove from the heat and transfer all the cooked onions and garlic to the container of your blender.
-
Also, to the blender, add the softened chiles (draining any excess water) and the diced tomatoes. Purée until totally smooth. If your blender isn’t large enough, split this mixture into two batches to ensure a creamy consistency.
-
Pour the puréed mixture back into the soup pot. Add in the chicken stock and shredded cooked chicken.
-
Bring the soup to a gentle simmer, then reduce the heat to low and let it simmer for at least 30 minutes to allow the flavors to meld and deepen. Stir occasionally.
-
Once the soup has simmered and is thoroughly heated, remove from the heat and stir in the thinly sliced Swiss chard leaves and freshly squeezed lime juice. The chard will wilt quickly in the hot soup.
-
Serve hot, generously topped with crispy homemade tortilla strips, fresh lime wedges, shredded cheese, cubed avocado, and chopped cilantro.
For tortilla strips:
-
Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C) and add the cut corn tortillas to a parchment-lined rimmed baking sheet, spreading them in an even layer.
-
Drizzle generously with extra virgin olive oil and sprinkle with your desired amount of kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper. Toss gently to coat.
-
Bake for about 12-15 minutes, or until they are lightly browned and crispy. Keep a close eye on these tortillas because they can go from perfectly golden to burnt in a matter of seconds. Remove from oven and let cool slightly before serving.
For roast chicken (optional):
-
Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C) and line a rimmed baking sheet with parchment paper.
-
Place the bone-in split chicken breasts on the prepared baking sheet. Lightly drizzle olive oil over the chicken and rub it evenly to ensure it’s coated.
-
Sprinkle generously with kosher salt and ground black pepper.
-
Bake for about 1 hour, or until the internal temperature reaches 165 degrees F (74 degrees C) and the chicken is fully cooked through.
-
Once cooked, remove from the oven and let cool on the baking sheet for a few minutes.
-
Once cool enough to handle, pick off the meat from the bones and shred it. Discard the bones and skin.
